Jeralyn Merritt, trying to use fear to persuade liberals to roll over and vote for Obama-Biden:

How many Supreme Court justices would a McCain/Palin Administration get to appoint? Somewhere between 1 and 4 by my count.

Uh, no. A McCain/Palin administration would appoint as many Supreme Court justices as the Democratic Party would allow; we’ve already seen how “effective” an “opposition” party Congressional Dems have been since the Clarence Thomas hearings when it comes to blocking right-wing activist judges from ascending to the SCOTUS, so spare me the Bushian politics of fear, Ms. Merritt.

Further, don’t invoke Roe V. Wade, either. There are so many state-level restrictions on abortion in addition to the federal ones that, for most intents and purposes, the health care procedure is impossible to get. For some women, the procedure is impossible to get for all intents and purposes.

Obama is trying to do damage control over his betrayal of the progressives and liberals who were foolish enough to support him, but regardless of what John Kerryesque nuances he adds, the fact remains that Obama would further restrict a woman’s right to choose when she receives a particular gynecological medical procedure:

[Obama] would support a ban on abortions after 22 weeks–even if a woman sought the procedure because she was in “mental distress.” Obama told a Christian magazine, Relevant, that only women with a “serious physical issue” should be able to get an abortion post-viability.

As I wrote yesterday, that’s contrary to 35 years of Supreme Court jurisprudence on the issue, which has always demanded that abortion bans contain an exception to allow the procedure to protect a woman’s “mental health,” as well as her physical health. Only Justices Thomas and Scalia have expressed the view that a “mental health” exception is not required.

Obama supporters should be ashamed of themselves for supporting him. And so should NARAL.

Nearly a week ago I asked if chipping away at what’s left of Roe v. Wade was next on Obama’s list of progressive ideals to betray. Sure enough, the fucker’s gone after that one, too:

In an interview this week with “Relevant,” a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain “a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother.”

Obama then added: “Now, I don’t think that ‘mental distress’ qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term.”

Obama isn’t so stupid as to not understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. No, the sleazy fucking bastard has decided to throw women under a bus just to court the American Taliban crowd — which will not be satisfied with anything less than the criminalization of abortion, the mandatory execution of any doctor who performs the procedure, and the execution of any woman who has the procedure done.

In the meantime, Obama looks like a panderer to the Talibaners and to the progressives and liberals foolish enough to have believed him to be on their side.

Get ready for Obama to get the “John Kerry treatment”. It’s coming. And you know what? It almost seems like Obama wants McCain to win.

Update, 07/04/08, 12:02 PM:
Via Avedon comes Melissa’s thoughts on Obama’s latest sell-out. She raises some excellent points.
