Maybe it’s not hypocrisy.
Yeah, that’s the ticket. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to make love with my wife, Morgan Fairchild, whom I’ve seen naked.
Update, 08/02/08, 7:15 AM:
Steve Benen speculates that Obama is playing the GOP for suckers, due to a ridiculously-large segment of the public having bought-in to the Republican Noise Machine’s offshore drilling propaganda:
…there’s a small part of me that wonders if Obama is playing a little game with Republicans here. Obama surely knows that it takes at least two years to process new drilling leases, and three to five years for new drilling ships and other equipment [to] become available. Is it at least possible that Obama is offering Republicans a sucker’s bet? Obama endorses a “comprehensive” energy policy in the short term, knowing full well that coastal drilling, even if approved tomorrow, wouldn’t even begin until the end of what would be his first term? Possibly even giving him time to fix the policy later and/or educate the public better?
Let’s say Benen is right and this is yet another secret plan of Obama’s (similar to the secret plan many O-bots swear he has regarding FISA).
First, the timing of this latest reversal couldn’t have been worse (i.e. right after blasting McCain for being in Big Oil’s wallet, he jumps into that wallet himself and suddenly decides he can get behind some offshore drilling after all); it looks like he’s been bought, and that isn’t going to endear him to anyone who’s been paying attention.
Second, Obama’s inability to sway the media and the public on this issue isn’t exactly confidence-inspiring. How does he expect to govern from the White House if he can’t persuade voters to support his initiatives?
